PROGRAM INFORMATION
WELCOME TO ART APPRECIATION! Below you will find general information about the program as well as some additional links to help guide you...
ART APPRECIATION is a volunteer program that runs from October through May. Parent volunteers have an opportunity to work with their child's classroom expanding the student's knowledge of art and creativity. There are 5-6 pre-planned lessons per grade level. NO EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY! Lesson plans, project ideas, video links, and some power point presentations can all be found in the menu to the left. Hard copy files with project samples, large prints, and some art supplies can be found in the PTA office on the Art Appreciation shelves. Follow the pre-planned lesson plans or create your own! Have fun!!
SCHEDULING : Hopefully you will have 2-3 volunteers per classroom. Volunteers work directly with the teachers to schedule how many presentations they would like, as well as dates and timing that work best for the classroom. One volunteer should take the lead and communicate with the teacher at the beginning of the year. Some teachers may choose to do all 6, some may prefer to have only 3 or 4. If you are short on volunteers, you are not required to do all 6. Generally presentations should last 45 - 60 minutes. Volunteers can pair up... sometimes it is helpful to have an extra set of hands to help prep supplies or manage projects. NOTE : Always confirm date and time with your teacher the week of or before your presentation.
LESSON ROTATION : The ART lessons are on a rotation schedule per grade. Links to the Artist Rotation Schedules and Class Number Assignments can be found in the menu to the left under SCHEDULE or under your GRADE specific heading. Please refer to these documents and try to follow the rotation schedule to avoid conflicts with materials/folders/prints being checked out at the same time.
MATERIALS : Prints and file folders with project samples are available for you to use in the PTA office on the Art Appreciation shelves. Please fill out the SIGN-OUT SHEET when checking out and returning materials. Please return items in a timely fashion. Some of the multi-age classrooms have more than one class doing a presentation within a month. Some Art Supplies can also be found on the Art Appreciation shelves in the PTA office. Please inform the chairperson(s) if supplies are running low. NOTE : When the PTA office is in use for music lessons, you should try not to interrupt them. The best days to gather supplies are Monday and Friday.
CURRICULUM TIE-IN : Sometimes an Art lesson can tie-in to your classroom's curriculum... Be sure to ask your teacher when scheduling your presentation!
FINAL NOTE : Some of these artists had complicated lives. Some ended their lives tragically after years of suffering. Sometimes it was that suffering that lead to some of their greatest works of art. The biographies of the artists are provided to you as background information. You, as the volunteer (and a parent) can omit any information that you feel is best not to mention.
